Position Description:

A Postdoctoral Research Scholar position is available in the Acute Care Surgery Division in the Department of Surgery. The postdoctoral research scholar position provides an opportunity to join an existing team that is conducting clinical research in the fields of trauma, burn, emergency general surgery, and injury prevention. The post-doctoral research scholar will work primarily with Drs. Dionne Skeete, Patrick McGonagill, and Colette Galet as well as other members of the Acute Care Surgery Division. The scholar will collect and analyze data from existing projects, develop manuscripts to submit to leading journals, and take an active role in current and future research.



The main research topics that are a divisional focus include clinical research studies investigating the role of immune cells in sepsis and the role of frailty on outcomes in trauma, burn, and emergency general surgery patient populations. The division also has research projects in other subject areas that cover the breadth of trauma, burn, and emergency general surgery topics. Being an American College of Surgeons verified Level I trauma center and an American Burn Association verified burn center, the division manages both the trauma and burn registries. The division also has established cross departmental and multi-institutional research collaborations.



The post-doctoral candidate’s specific project related responsibilities will be developed in consultation with Drs. Skeete and Galet and may include project management, data collection, development of research hypotheses, analytic strategies and scholar-initiated analyses and projects related to the division’s core projects.



The post-doctoral position is a one-year full time appointment. Reappointment for additional years is possible depending on the fellow’s performance as it relates to their initiative, support of the division, their publication record, and available funding.

Education Requirement:

  • A Doctoral degree is required. MD preferred.

Required Qualifications:

  • A strong clinical research background.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required.

  • This individual will be involved in research subject recruitment involving emergency general surgery, ICU, trauma, and burn patients. Empathy, patience, and excellent communication skills are required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of regulatory guidelines and procedures as set forth by the IRB and/sponsoring agencies.

  • Prior knowledge and experience with Office 365, REDCap, EPIC, SPSS, and EndNote.
