Basic Function and Responsibility

To conduct general cellular/molecular studies in a multidisciplinary vision research laboratory, to set up and operate laboratory equipment and to record and consolidate research data

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare human specimens for histological studies, including dissection, embedding, sectioning, staining, immunolabeling, and photomicrography.

Prepare human specimens for molecular biological and/or cell culture studies.

Participate in the acquisition of eyes from human donors on an on-call basis.

Initiate, maintain and perform experiments.

Maintain daily records on data procedures carried out.

Perform computer and library data base searches on specified topics; prepare bibliographies; retrieve and maintain references; and maintain journals and subscriptions.

Keep the premises neat and orderly.

Supervision Received

Supervision and training in advanced techniques will be provided by the Lab Manager and the Principal Investigator on an ongoing basis.

Supervision Exercised

Functional supervision of student workers may be exercised.

Qualifications

A Bachelors Degree is Required

Qualifications

Requires the practical or academic knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and an ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge that is generally associated with a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of the dissection and processing human eyes for histological research.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with immunohistochemistry and fluorescence microscopy is desirable.

Experience with protein and Western blot techniques

Familiarity with Macintosh and PC computers, including the applications Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Photoshop is desirable.
