Position Description:

The laboratory of Dr. Mary Weber in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking a full-time Post-Baccalaureate Research Intern.



This Research Intern position will assist with cutting-edge research focused on understanding how the intracellular bacterial pathogens Chlamydia trachomatis and Orientia tsutsugamushi use secreted effector proteins to manipulate host cell processes and promote infection. Projects in the laboratory employ a multidisciplinary approach integrating molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and genetic techniques.

Annual Salary $38,755 to commensurate

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or Immunology or related field

Required Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a microbiology or molecular biology laboratory is required.

  • Prior experience working with pathogenic microorganisms.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of the following:

    • General microbiologic techniques, such as culture, storage, and safe handling of pathogenic agents.

    • Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, agarose gel electrophoresis, and western blotting.

    • Mammalian cell culture and sterile techniques.

    • Gathering, recording, and analyzing experimental data.

    • Data analysis and presentation software, such as Excel, Photoshop, and GraphPad Prism.

  • Working proficiency with each of the following:

    • Passaging and maintaining various cell lines.

    • Immunofluorescence microscopy.
