Position Description:

Position Summary: 



The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics Division of Hematology/Oncology is seeking a Research Intern in the laboratory of Dr. David Gordon. The lab studies pediatric cancer and uses a variety of cellular and molecular biology approaches to investigate the mechanisms that cause pediatric cancer, as well develop novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of cancer. This position will provide support for pediatric cancer research by conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing results, and performing operational duties associated with the laboratory.



Position Responsibilities:




  • Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project.

  • Perform research activities in cancer biology, including, protein biochemical and immunohistochemistry procedures, tissue and cell line culture procedures, and in vivo mouse studies for testing cancer drugs.

  • As individual skills develop, troubleshoot and analyze protocols; propose modifications to other researchers or principal investigator.

  • Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for experimental protocols.

  • As individual skills develop perform complex techniques as outlined in research protocols and test and evaluate current procedures. Set up and operate equipment for experiments.

  • Perform experimental procedures assuring fidelity to protocols; record and consolidate data as directed by Principal Investigator (PI).

  • Collect, track, and perform data entry for reports.

  • Renew EHS, IRB and IACUC submissions or equivalent protocol.

  • Assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and facility equipment. 

  • Assist with procurement of supplies and materials.

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering or a related field OR equivalent combination of education and related laboratory experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Willingness to learn relevant lab protocols under supervision of the principal investigator and other research staff is required.

  • Ability to work well within a team.

  • Demonstrated excellence with organizational skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with pediatric research, either clinical or laboratory-based.




  • Experience with standard cellular and molecular biology approaches, including western blotting, microscopy, and PCR.

  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing pediatric oncology care through research, clinical care, or advocacy.
