Position Details

Full/Part Time Status:Full Time
Percent Time:100%
Position Description:

The laboratory of Dr. Ksenia Krupina is seeking a full-time Post-Baccalaureate Research Intern to join a research group studying the molecular origins of DNA damage, genome instability and chromothripsis in cancer.

The Krupina Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms that initiate chromosome shattering, with a particular focus on cytoplasmic DNA nucleases that gain access to chromosomes after nuclear envelope rupture. Our work aims to define how “all-at-once” genome damage occurs, how it is regulated, and how it contributes to tumorigenesis.

The intern will assist with lab operations and perform experiments under general and direct supervision. This position offers hands-on training in molecular and cellular biology approaches and close mentorship in experimental design, data interpretation, and scientific communication.

Please see the Krupina Lab website for more information about our research interests:

https://krupina.lab.uiowa.edu

This position is designed for individuals who:

• Seek training, experience, and mentoring in a research setting

• Plan to pursue a graduate or professional degree in biomedical sciences

• Have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency

Post-Baccalaureate Research Internship Program:

The intern will gain experience in interdisciplinary approaches including:

• High-content and live-cell imaging

• Genome engineering and functional genetic screens

• Mapping DNA damage genome-wide

• Different cancer model systems

The Krupina Lab emphasizes mentorship, scientific reasoning, and preparation for graduate school, including guidance on applications, presentations, and scientific writing

Education Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, or a related field

Required Qualifications:

Basic knowledge of:

  • Mammalian cell culture and sterile technique

  • Standard molecular biology methods (PCR, cloning, plasmid preparation, gel electrophoresis)

  • Protein expression and purification

  • Fluorescence microscopy

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Interest in laboratory organization, inventory management, and equipment maintenance

Desirable Qualifications:

• Prior research experience in molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry

• Experience with fluorescence microscopy or image analysis

• Familiarity with genome engineering (CRISPR/Cas9) or protein expression/purification

• Experience working independently while maintaining accurate research records

• Strong interest in mechanistic biology, cancer research, and quantitative cell biology
