Position Description:

The long-term goal of the Glykys laboratory is to identify novel strategies to treat seizures and cytotoxic edema. The Research Intern will be responsible for conducting and analyzing experiments on neuronal swelling in mice using two-photon imaging and for employing electrophysiological techniques. The primary focus is the study of neuronal swelling, particularly during the neonatal period. The candidate will work independently under the close supervision of Dr. Joseph Glykys and other members of the Glykys lab. The position is within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Neurology.



Position Responsibilities:




  • Perform rodent surgical procedures.

  • Conduct multi-photon imaging; training will be provided.

  • Conduct electrophysiological experiments; training will be provided.

  • Support the laboratory by helping to maintain mouse colonies, prepare solutions, and maintain detailed and accurate lab protocols and records.

  • Maintain detailed and accurate notes of experimental results.

  • Perform basic neuroscience research experiments.

  • Organize, analyze, and summarize acquired data using scientific and statistical methods. This will include the use of different software.

  • Present data at lab meetings and summarize findings in written form.

  • Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience or a science-related field (e.g., biology, chemistry). GPA 3.5 or above

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in prior wet-bench laboratories of at least 6 months.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, statistical program as Prism or other similar ones

  • Some programming experience in any language

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with computational skills, such as programming/writing scripts in Igor Pro, MATLAB, and ImageJ, is desirable.

  • Experience with microscopy imaging.

  • Experience with fluorescence imaging.

  • Intellectual contribution to the research is highly desirable.
