| Position Description: | The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking a motivated Research Intern to support ongoing clinical research studies within the department. This position offers the opportunity to work in a high-quality academic medical center alongside experienced investigators and clinical research staff. The Research Intern will contribute to participant recruitment, data collection, regulatory documentation, and day‑to‑day study operations while gaining hands‑on experience in clinical research processes and compliance standards.
The Research Intern functions as part of an interdisciplinary research team and works closely with principal investigators, research coordinators, clinical providers, and study participants.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary research team.
- Assist with collecting data from research participants in accordance with approved study protocols.
- Organize study visits, procedures, and follow‑up activities while maintaining accurate and complete participant records.
- Understand study protocols in detail and support participant recruitment and enrollment by ensuring all eligibility requirements and pre‑requisites are met.
- Explain study procedures to participants and assist in obtaining informed consent.
- Provide general guidance to participants and families regarding study intent and logistics.
- Prepare and present educational materials for participants and staff as needed.
- Carry out assigned components of study procedures under supervision.
- Obtain, process, label, and ship human blood and tissue samples following study and institutional guidelines.
- Communicate regularly with the principal investigator and research staff regarding study progress and participant status.
- Collect, assemble, and send required materials (charts, billing documents, specimens, imaging, pathology slides) to appropriate laboratories or agencies.
- Maintain competency in specialized equipment, data entry systems, and study‑specific procedures.
- Assist with preparation of IRB submissions, continuing reviews, modifications, and regulatory documentation.
- Serve as a liaison to UIHC/University business offices for identifying research‑related tests and procedures.
- Maintain effective and professional working relationships with faculty, study staff, participants, and families.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

| Education Requirement: |
- Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
|
| Required Qualifications: |
- General understanding of scientific principles and the ability to apply them appropriately in a research setting.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems using foundational scientific knowledge.
- Ability to maintain detailed, accurate records of study procedures and outcomes.
- Proficiency with general computer applications and willingness to learn research databases and software systems.
- Ability to work under deadlines with general supervision.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to complete detailed work accurately.

| Desirable Qualifications: |
- Fellowship Experience writing or contributing to SOPs, study protocols, or technical reports.
- Demonstrated initiative, ability to prioritize tasks, and willingness to develop new technical skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong communication skills with team members and study participants.
- Familiarity with good documentation practices (GDP).
