Position Description:

 



The laboratory of Dr. Li Wu in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking a full-time Post-Baccalaureate Research Intern to perform an NIH-funded 2-year project. The intern will work in a research laboratory to study RNA modification in HIV-associated cancers in aging populations. The Wu lab particularly values diversity, inclusiveness, team-work, communication, and organizational skills. The intern will help develop an independent research project and assist with daily laboratory operations.

Annual Salary $36,500 to commensurate



This position is designed for individuals who:




  • Seek training, experience, and mentoring in a research setting




  • Plan to pursue a graduate or professional degree in biomedical science, medicine, or a related field




  • Have US citizenship or permanent residency

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or related field

Required Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a microbiology or virology laboratory is required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of the following:

    • General microbiologic techniques

    • Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, qPCR, plasmid purification, transfection, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, ELISA, working with RNA

    • Mammalian cell culture and sterile techniques





 

Desirable Qualifications:

Working proficiency with each of the following:




  • Isolate peripheral blood monocytic cells (PBMCs) from people living with HIV

  • General microbiologic techniques

  • Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, qPCR, plasmid purification, transfection, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, ELISA, working with RNA

  • Mammalian cell culture and sterile techniques
