Position Description:

Drs. Bengi Baran and Amanda McCleery at the University of Iowa’s Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences are seeking a full-time post-baccalaureate research intern for their collaborative projects for the Research Program of Excellence in Schizophrenia. The overarching goal of this project is to conduct collaborative, highly translational research to elucidate the role of cerebellar and thalamo-cortical circuitries in cognitive deficits and symptoms in schizophrenia. The techniques employed include polysomnography (sleep monitoring with electroencephalography), magnetic resonance imaging, event-related potentials, psychophysiology and behavioral/cognitive/clinical assessments. The research intern will be a core member of a collaborative research group and will actively contribute to all aspects of the ongoing project.



Primary responsibilities include administrative aspects of research (e.g., recruiting and scheduling participants, participant database management) as well as data collection and analysis. Our collaborative research program provides a highly supportive environment.



This is an excellent clinical research opportunity for someone bound for graduate school in psychology, neuroscience, or medicine. In addition to training in several psychology and neuroscience research methods, the position offers opportunities for co-authorships on publications and presenting work at conferences.

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, or related field.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 year of research experience working in a laboratory with human subjects.

  • Basic data entry and data management skills.

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week flexibly. Testing may take place evenings, early mornings or on weekends.

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Capable of independent, self-directed work as well as working in a collaborative team environment.

  • US citizenship or a Legal Permanent Resident status is a requirement to participate in the Post-Baccalaureate Research Intern program

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with participant recruitment in research settings

  • Experience working with clinical populations especially individuals with severe mental illness.

  • Experience with statistical analysis and programing packages (e.g., SPSS, Matlab, R, Python etc.)

  • Experience in acquisition and analyses of behavioral and/or neuroimaging experiments in humans (e.g., EEG, cognitive testing, interviews) ideal, although we will also consider applicants who can demonstrate a strong commitment to learn these skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including demonstrated experience with professional communication and conflict management
