Dr. Richard Guyer’s laboratory at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Surgery is seeking a full-time Post-Baccalaureate Research Intern. The intern will have the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary research laboratory (i.e., cancer research, cell development, and transcriptional regulation) that studies how aberrant development leads to pediatric solid tumors, particularly neuroblastoma. The intern will work with fish and/or rodent models of tissue development and tumor biology, as well as with cell culture systems. Experience will be gained with data processing and analysis. The intern may also have an opportunity to gain valuable experience writing and maintaining laboratory protocols. Training will be provided.

This appointment is for a limited duration, anticipated length of one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year. At the end of the second year of employment or enrollment into graduate school, the appointment will terminate.

A Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a research laboratory environment.

• Experience in a medical or biological research laboratory environment


• Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills


• Experience with Microsoft Office 


• Basic knowledge of the following:
  
  
  
  • Cell culture techniques, including sterile technique
  
  
  • Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, qPCR, plasmid purification, gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting
  
  
  
  

• Have a willingness and capacity to learn new skills


• Previous experience with animal (fish and/or rodent) handling


• Hands-on experience with DNA/RNA techniques: DNA/RNA isolation and PCR experiments. 


• Hands-on experience with Protein techniques: protein isolation, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry/ immunofluorescence. 


• Experience with bioinformatic datasets, analysis, and coding (R, Python, Bash scripting)
