The College of Education at the University of Iowa is making a major investment in addressing critical mental health issues in our communities and schools. The Department of Counselor Education is working to make a significant impact in the field of rural mental health in the State of Iowa. We are seeking a dedicated and innovative faculty member to contribute to our Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs.

Position Description

The Department of Counselor Education at the University of Iowa invites applications for one full-time, open-rank tenure-track, academic year faculty position in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs to begin August 18, 2027.

We seek an individual with evidence of significant professional promise or accomplishments in research that impact mental health issues, including in rural communities and schools. This individual should demonstrate:

The successful candidate will join a research and training partnership with the Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling MA programs to teach graduate-level courses. This individual may also join in partnership with the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs, following College of Education trends, have strong department, college, university, and clinical community support, and are committed to an environment that values multiple perspectives and collegiality. The preferred candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to evidence-based and research-informed clinical work and have experience implementing CACREP accreditation standards in mental health and school counselor education.

Responsibilities

1. 
   

   Serving as a core faculty member in the master’s in Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling programs.

   
   


2. 
   

   Teaching courses in Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling in areas consistent with the candidate’s interests and department needs.

   
   


3. 
   

   Conducting a program of research and publication in an area of specialization addressing school mental health, including in rural communities.

   
   


4. 
   

   Seeking and administering external grants for research, training, and service.

   
   


5. 
   

   Advising students at the master’s and doctoral levels including clinical supervision.

   
   


6. 
   

   Supervising doctoral students’ dissertations.

About the Department

The Department of Counselor Education develops exceptional and ethical mental health advocates, counselors, and counselor educators for ever-changing communities. Our MA programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, School Counseling, and our PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, contribute to the profession through the creation and dissemination of knowledge, skills, and attitudes appropriate for the development of ethical and culturally sensitive counseling professionals. Our programs continue to be nationally ranked with our Rehabilitation Counseling Program recognized as the nation’s 5th-ranked program.  

By August 2027, prospective candidates must have:

An earned doctorate in Counseling from a Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program

OR

An earned doctorate in a closely related field with a master’s degree from a Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program

1. Concentration or specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Counseling with emphasis on mental health.


2. Evidence of potential for scholarly productivity, including publications recognized in the counseling profession, mental health, school counseling, counselor education, or related journals.


3. Evidence of and/or potential for attracting external funding.


4. Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses and supervising students in practica/internships.


5. Demonstrated commitment to collaborating with colleagues and communities from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.


6. Be a National Certified Counselor [NCC] and/or Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor [CCMHC] or be certification eligible.

1. Success in procuring competitive national or international funding for training, employment, research, and/or implementation of interventions. 


2. Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or a Licensed Professional Counselor, or eligible for counselor licensure in Iowa.


3. Certified School Counselor (CSC).


4. Experience teaching, supervising, and coordinating in a CACREP-accredited graduate program.


5. Experience with applied clinical research.
