The Department of Psychological and Quantitative Foundations at the University of Iowa invites applications for an Assistant Professor faculty position in our APA-accredited counseling psychology program. Area of research specialization is open. This full-time, academic year (9-month) position will begin August 18, 2027.

Description

The Counseling Psychology program at the University of Iowa is a vibrant, collaborative community, committed to training psychologists who are competent in counseling and psychological services through a scientist-practitioner-community engagement model. Accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1980, our program strives to produce counseling psychologists who promote psychology as both a profession and a science and who apply acquired skills to the advancement of the human condition across local, national and global communities. 

This Assistant Professor position will contribute to that community, addressing the critical need for mental health research, services, and training in Iowa and the U.S. Situated in the Department of Psychological and Quantitative Foundations, the position offers unique opportunities to collaborate with faculty and staff across disciplines and topic areas, including rural mental health, substance use, vocational psychology, community mental health, and child and adolescent well-being. In addition, our new bachelor’s degree in Counseling and Behavioral Health Services offers exciting possibilities to teach and mentor undergraduate students.

The successful candidate will advise counseling psychology doctoral students, engage in scholarly research in alignment with their program of research, seek external funding, teach graduate-level courses, and provide service to the program. The preferred candidate will have a strong commitment to the scientist-practitioner philosophy with a systems-based perspective. Responsibilities

Major responsibilities include: conducting an active program of research and scholarship; teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses consistent with program and departmental needs; advising and mentoring graduate students in the counseling psychology program; providing program, department, college, and professional service. The successful candidate will work in full collaboration with faculty members in the counseling psychology program to consider new initiatives within the college and university.

About the Counseling Psychology Program

The Counseling Psychology program at The University of Iowa is a doctoral program that was granted full accreditation by the American Psychological Association in 1980. The program trains health service psychologists who are competent in counseling and psychological services informed by the integration of diverse scholarship. Our program strives to produce counseling psychologists who promote psychology as both a profession and a science and who apply acquired skills to improving psychological services for all communities. Prospective candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in counseling psychology from an APA-accredited program.

(1) Evidence of a strong, independent program of research relevant to applied counseling psychology, (2) Potential for securing external funds to support research, training, and/or program development, (3) Evidence of the potential to teach, advise, and mentor graduate students in research and practice, (4) Ability to contribute to an academic environment consisting of those from various cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds, (5) Licensed as a psychologist in the state of Iowa or capable of becoming licensed as a psychologist within two years of employment, and (6) Evidence of commitment to service.

(1) Program of research that has the potential for collaboration across disciplines and that complements existing University of Iowa counseling psychology faculty, and (2) Interest in undergraduate teaching and program development
