Position Description:

The Department of Biology at the University of Iowa invites applications for multiple non-tenure-track Instructor positions (50%–100% appointment) beginning August 19, 2026. Initial appointments are for one year and are subject to annual review and renewal.



These positions will primarily contribute to instruction in the introductory biology laboratory curriculum for life sciences, including courses such as Human Biology, Foundations of Biology, and Diversity of Form and Function. These courses examine unifying concepts of living systems and emphasize the variety, structure, and function of life.



Instructional Responsibilities




  • Lead multiple weekly laboratory sections (2–3 hours each) for introductory biology courses.

  • Clearly explain biological concepts, experimental procedures, and laboratory techniques.

  • Demonstrate proper use of laboratory equipment and ensure student comprehension.

  • Attend lectures as needed to maintain alignment between lecture and laboratory instruction.



Assessment & Evaluation




  • Grade laboratory assignments, homework, written reports, and student presentations using established rubrics.

  • Develop, administer, and grade quizzes to assess student learning.

  • Proctor course exams and ensure adherence to academic integrity policies.

  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to support student development.



Student Support




  • Hold regular office hours to assist students with course material, review concepts, and address questions.

  • Facilitate make-up laboratory sessions as needed.

  • Foster a welcoming, supportive, and engaging learning environment.



Preparation & Coordination




  • Attend and actively participate in weekly preparatory and instructional team meetings.

  • Collaborate with faculty and instructional staff to ensure consistency across lab sections.

  • Prepare materials and activities to ensure effective and well-organized lab sessions.



Laboratory Safety & Compliance




  • Enforce all laboratory safety protocols and ensure students follow proper procedures.

  • Maintain a safe, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.

Education Requirement:

  • B.A., B.S., or higher degree in biology, biology education, or a related field.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate biology education.

  • Experience teaching introductory biology lecture and/or laboratory courses.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with University of Iowa instructional technologies and web applications (e.g., ICON).

  • Experience supporting students from a variety of populations in an academic setting.
