Position Description:

CLINICAL ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

ANTICIPATED START DATE: AUGUST 1, 2026 (FLEXIBLE)



The University of Iowa, School of Social Work seeks a full-time, 12-month, clinical assistant or associate professor to support student success when preparing for, entering, and completing social work practicum at the master’s level. This position involves teaching practicum content courses, assisting with training practicum students and supervisors, identification and development of new placement sites based on the needs of the program and students, and serving as the lead liaison to practicum sites.



The individual should have social work practice experience and expertise to guide MSW students specializing in clinical or leadership practice in seeking practicum placements. The individual should also have experience teaching in social work, with the ability to teach in person and online. They should also be able to engage in professional productivity and service. This position is based in Iowa City.



The initial appointment is for one year (2026-27), renewable for up to two years (2027-28) and 2028-29), and renewable thereafter in three-year increments, pending collegiate approval and demonstrated excellence in teaching. The School of Social Work offers programs at the BA, MSW, and PhD levels with faculty scholarship foci in the areas of aging, child welfare, behavioral and mental health, and organizations and communities. In addition to programs on our main Iowa City campus, the School of Social Work maintains MSW programs in Des Moines, Sioux City, and an online program serving all of Iowa and surrounding states. Education Requirement:

  • MSW from a CSWE accredited program.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of three years post-graduate level practice experience.

  • Demonstrated teaching experience in social work.

  • Experience with practicum education (as practicum supervisor, liaison, or practicum seminar instructor)

  • Current license at the Master’s level of social work (LMSW).

  • Potential for professional productivity, practice, and service through such activities as CEU or conference presentations, professional consultation, outreach activities, publications, membership in state or regional boards or professional organizations.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Educational Policy and Academic Standards.

  • LISW or equivalent clinical social work licensure in current state of residence/employment.

  • Five or more years post-graduate level practice experience in clinical or leadership practice.
