The Carver College of Medicine at The University of Iowa seeks candidates for the position of Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine. The Carver College of Medicine is a highly ranked medical school, is among the top twenty-five public medical schools in National Institutes of Health funding, and holds a unique position within the state and region by providing care and expertise for the most complex medical conditions. The Department of Internal Medicine is an integral part of UI Health Care which is a partnership between the College of Medicine and The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the United States and has close affiliation with the adjacent Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center. With nearly 25 faculty members, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has exceptional achievement in research, patient care and teaching, as well as a distinguished record of national and international leadership. As part of the James A. Clifton Digestive Health Center, the division provides high-quality clinical care to patients with gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional diseases in a multidisciplinary environment. Divisional faculty play an important role in educating and mentoring medical students, residents, fellows, and other health care professionals. The division is actively involved in clinical and basic science, with a focus on further understanding gastrointestinal and liver diseases and helping to design improved treatment options for patients with these illnesses.

The Division Director will partner with departmental and health system leadership to advance the success of the division. In this capacity, the director will represent the interests of the division, department, and health system. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment, appointments, and evaluations; managing educational, clinical, and research programs; fiscal planning and management; and both short-term and long-term strategic planning.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

• Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree. This position requires completion of an ACGME-accredited Residency Program.

• A record consistent with appointment as an Associate or full Professor of Internal Medicine in either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest.


• An outstanding record of accomplishments in teaching, research, or service as evident by national recognition.


• An exceptional program in clinical or laboratory-based research.


• A minimum of five years of demonstrated academic and/or clinical leadership achievement in a large volume, high-performing, contemporary division with comparable complexity to the University of Iowa Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology.


• Ability to demonstrate excellent financial acumen with experience in interpreting productivity reports.


• Demonstrated leadership as a creative and accomplished administrator who understands the changing healthcare environment and the complexities of clinical operations.


• Experience with building and leading new programs.


• Experience with educating trainees at various levels.


• Experience with developing a basic or clinical research infrastructure and securing extramural funding.


• Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.


• A forward-looking outgoing style that will facilitate growth of the division through recruiting, community engagement, and development of innovative clinical programs.


• Must be eligible for licensure in the state of Iowa.

• Candidates must possess board certification in Gastroenterology or Hepatology.
