The University of Iowa Departments of Anesthesia and Radiology are jointly seeking an experienced, accomplished and innovative independent investigator to join a multidisciplinary team investigating fundamental problems in respiratory medicine and critical care. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research using advanced imaging techniques and computational modeling to study cardiopulmonary structure and function relationships.

The Department of Anesthesia is seeking a faculty member for appointment on the Research Track at the rank of Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor, depending on qualifications.

Position Responsibilities:

• Conduct research involving positron emission tomography (PET) and/or computed tomography (CT) imaging of the lungs.


• Develop and apply computational models to analyze airway behavior and ventilation heterogeneity in conditions such as asthma and pulmonary arterial hypertension.


• Collaborate with clinicians, engineers, and scientists across departments to design and execute experiments.


• Analyze imaging data and contribute to manuscript preparation and publication.


• Present findings at scientific meetings and contribute to grant applications.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

• Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant biomedical science field.

• Experience with medical imaging, image analysis, or computational modeling.


• Strong programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or similar).


• Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as teamwork abilities.


• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring.

• Prior experience in cardiopulmonary research or critical care medicine.


• Interest in translational research and clinical collaboration.
