Position Description: | University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics seeks a cytogeneticist. Appointment rank is open and may be to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest. Appointment rank to Instructor of Pediatrics (non-tenure) may also be considered. The individual selected will join the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics. The individual selected will join the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics to provide patient care, teaching, and consultative services in cytogenetics. The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is committed to excellence in providing comprehensive services for children, adults and prenatal patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genetic conditions. The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board-certified medical geneticists, a molecular genetic pathologist, physician assistants, a nurse practitioner, genetic counselors, nurses and a dietitian. Our clinics include: General Genetics Clinics, Metabolic Genetics Clinics, Connective Tissue Disorder Clinics, Neurofibromatosis Clinics, Cancer Predisposition, Multidisciplinary Tuberous Sclerosis Clinics, Undiagnosed Disease Clinics, Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Clinics, and Outreach Genetics Clinics. Genetic diseases and disorders affect families as well as individuals. The medical team provides the information, support and follow-up needed to make informed decisions. Our medical genetics team collaborates with state and federal agencies, educators, researchers, support groups, and others to provide the latest information and treatment options for Iowans and their families. The ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program at Stead Family Children’s Hospital trains 50 pediatric resident physicians. Education Requirement: | Must hold an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD degree in biology, Molecular and/or Cellular Biology, Genetics or related field. |
Required Qualifications: | Board certified or eligible in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics OR board certified in both Clinical Cytogenetics and Clinical Molecular Genetics. Demonstrated proficiency with chromosome analysis (karyotyping) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Experience with chromosomal microarray and next generation sequencing methodologies. License or eligible for licensure in the State of Iowa (MD candidates). |
Desirable Qualifications: | Interest and/or expertise in conventional cytogenetics (chromosomes and FISH). Experience in a clinical laboratory setting with CAP/CLIA and quality control programs. Experience in clinical validation and implementation of new high throughput molecular genetic testing methodologies. Experience in patient-oriented research. Teaching competence in pediatrics and/or laboratory medicine for medical students and residents. Evidence of scholarly activity. Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. |
