Position Description:

The Department of History at the University of Iowa has an opening for 2024-25 academic year for a 100% Visiting Assistant Professor in Modern American history. The successful candidate will offer four courses each semester. Preferred candidates will be prepared to teach undergraduate classes in American Women’s History or the History of the US in the World, general education classes, as well as courses tailored to their own research specialization.



This is a one-year, non-tenure track position, with possibility of renewal up to three years. Preference will go to candidates with demonstrated ability in a range of courses in one of the preferred fields. The selected candidate must have the Ph.D. in hand by August 21, 2024. The University of Iowa requires all new faculty complete a Criminal Background Check and Credential Check.

Education Requirement:

  • Must have the PhD in History or related field in hand by August 21, 2024.

  • Strong educational background in the field of Modern American history.

  • Candidate will have ability to teach four courses each semester, including general education courses and courses tailored to their own research specialization.

  • Preference to candidates with demonstrated ability in a range of Modern American history courses.
