Position Description:

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, and the Human Brain Research Laboratory invites Advanced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant applicants for an Assistant Professor position on the tenure track with a background and focus in the care of geriatric patients with neurosurgical conditions of the spine.  



The primary appointment of the faculty member will be in the Department of Neurosurgery. Successful applicants will be expected to participate, collaborate, and establish extramurally funded research and to provide clinical outpatient responsibilities in and around the department. This position will also provide the critical skills and programatic leadership that will greatly enhance our department’s research and clinical missions.



The Assistant Professor will work in conjunction with our spine team to ensure that patients can be evaluated, treated for their diagnosis quickly and efficiently, spending time with patients in the ambulatory clinical setting, screening patients, preparing patients for surgery, and following patients through surgery on their road back to full recovery. Some of the research activities may involve following these patients in the inpatient setting as well.



BASIC FUNCTION



Function as an Assistant Professor Faculty member, incorporating the primary role of APP and the supporting roles of consultant, educator, researcher, and administrator to support quality care and positive patient outcomes. Exercise autonomy in medical decision-making for the Neurosurgery service. Function independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for the Neurosurgery inpatient and outpatient population. Perform direct patient care.  Assist in educating healthcare students, residents, and fellows as they rotate through the respective departments and divisions.  This position will work the full continuum of care from inpatient and outpatient patient populations.



The UI Department of Neurosurgery is made up of more than 15 full-time faculty members who provide national and international leadership across a range of neurological surgery specialties including but not limited to, brain tumor neurosurgery, endovascular neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, spinal surgery, and neurotrauma neurosurgery. The Department of Neurosurgery has a long tradition of excellence in research, a well-developed research infrastructure, and ample patient populations that support efforts in a variety of areas of investigation.

Education Requirement:

  • In addition to the required education to obtain an ARNP or PA license, a Ph.D. degree is required.

Required Qualifications:

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner




  • Licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required or eligibility to be licensed by date of hire is required.

  • Active DEA license or ability to apply for such license prior to or upon hire.

  • Active BLS certification.

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the State of Iowa and The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.



Physician Assistant




  • Physician Assistant:  Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.  Eligible to be licensed by the State of Iowa to perform as a Physician Assistant. 

  • Active DEA license or ability to apply for such license prior to or upon hire.

  • Active BLS certification.

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the State of Iowa and The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.



Other Required Qualifications:




  • Completed research training in various phases of Neurosurgery with an extensive focus in spine patients.

  • Reasonable (1-3 years) experience in area of clinical practice is required or previous experience in specified hospital specialty area or demonstrated knowledge of area of clinical practice.

  • Demonstrated experience providing clinical care to neurosurgical patients is required.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to mentor and teach graduate level students.

  • Must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills

  • Must possess a strong commitment to academic and clinical excellence

  • Must possess a strong interest in clinical education

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is highly desirable.

  • Experience providing overall medical care and medical management, guidance, education, and support for patients both in the outpatient and inpatient clinical setting is desirable.

  • Procedures and diagnosis experience in neurological disorders is highly desirable.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment.

  • Experience as a neurosurgical journal reviewer

  • Published research in the areas of neurosurgery, spinal cord injury, spinal tumors, vascular abnormalities, and spinal hemorrhages.

  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
