Position Description:

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts seeks a full time Visiting Assistant Professor in acting. This faculty member will teach six courses each year. They will include introductory to intermediate undergraduate acting as well as other topics depending on the candidate’s specialty, such as Musical Theatre, Acting for the Camera, Shakespeare, Acting in New Play Development. The visitor will be an active mentor to undergraduate actors, coaching and responding to their work in productions, and will advise general theatre students. The visitor may also participate in productions as an actor or director.



This is a full time one year appointment renewable for up to two additional years and will begin August 21, 2024.



Salary is $45,000.

Employer Profile:  The Department offers a BA in Theatre, which includes multiple courses in acting, movement and voice, and an MFA with specializations in Acting, Directing, Design, Dramaturgy, Playwriting and Stage Management. The MFA Acting program accepts students every three years. The University of Iowa is a leader in the development of new plays for the stage. The Department produces at least 20 productions annually, most of them new works.



 

Education Requirement:

MFA or equivalent experience

Required Qualifications:

  • professional artistic accomplishments in acting

  • experience teaching or directing at the college level beyond graduate school

  • experience in new play development.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach one or more of the following: Acting in Shakespeare, Musical theatre, Acting for the camera, Meisner technique

  • experience as a director

  • experience mentoring actors in new play development.
