Position Description:

The University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry invites applications for a full-time clinical or tenure-track faculty position as Assistant/Associate Dean for Education (Academic Affairs).  This position reports directly to the Dean.



Major responsibilities include: 




  • providing strategic leadership for the dental and advanced dental academic curriculums and educational programs;

  • actively participating as member of the Dean's administrative team with leadership, oversight, prioritization, and management of all college educational programs; 

  • specific activities involve - continued pedagogical development, evaluating assessments, leading strategy, resolving logistical issues in teaching and learning, content sequencing, and curricular issues;

  • assisting faculty with teaching and learning programs;

  • preparing, guiding, and managing the entire accreditation cycle (CODA); and

  • cultivating an environment of inclusion and respect for all students, faculty, and staff.



Related responsibilities include:




  • liaising with college leadership team regarding student learning trends in didactic, simulation and clinical environments;

  • interacting with the University community, and nationally with ADEA and other organizations, regarding education and learning;

  • liaising with the health science colleges on curricular matters and interprofessional programs;

  • providing oversight of course performance benchmarks and overseeing assessment and competency evaluations across the dental and advanced education curriculums;

  • working collaboratively with Department Heads (DEOs), course directors, and faculty to ensure a standardized syllabus format and learning objectives;

  • collaborating with the Dean for Students concerning student progress through the curriculum; and

  • providing support for Clerkship Directors, and Graduate Program Directors committees. 

Education Requirement:

  • DDS/DMD or equivalent, OR doctoral level in a health field (MD, PharmD, etc.), OR doctoral level in a health education profession (EdD);

Required Qualifications:

  • considerable teaching experience in a dental or related health profession academic setting(s);

  • combination of education and professional experience in curricular development, management, and assessment; and

  • record of actively fostering a climate that values and engages diversity in all its forms to enliven and make more inclusive the work of the college. 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • MS in Education or equivalent degree; 

  • demonstrated leadership and accomplishments in a health science education environment;

  • demonstrated experience in academic affairs at a director or higher level;

  • significant administrative experience in higher education especially in health professions accreditation; and

  • demonstrated scholarship in education.
