Position Description:

The Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa invites applications for an academic-year visiting instructor/professor position in the Art Education program. The position will begin August 16, 2023. This is a full-time academic-year (9 month) visiting instructor/professor position with a two-year appointment beginning August 16, 2023. The successful applicant will be expected to teach the equivalent of 3-4 courses per semester, in Art Education, and work with local schools on field experiences for students in the program. Faculty are required to engage in at least 4 hours per semester of collaboration with teachers in contributing to instruction in K12 classrooms. Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent start-up package, benefits, and research support.

About the Department and Art Education

The Department of Teaching and Learning (T & L) at the University of Iowa includes over 35 faculty members and 900 students. The Art Education Program has been a vital part of teacher education and training in the College of Education since 1971. We offer multiple pathways for teaching-artists and classroom teachers to hone their skills and expertise so that they can lead art experiences for children and youth. We host BA and MAT degree programs that lead to K-12 licensure, an MA in Art Education, endorsements in K-8 and 6-12 Art Education, and post-BA and post-MA Licensure options. Community Engagement is a central focus of program. Students have the opportunities to teach through our Saturday Morning Art Workshops, School of the Arts, a Partnership with United Action for Youth, as well as through collaborations with the Stanley Museum of Art and School of the Wild. We empower students to be cross-disciplinary teachers, makers, and leaders in art education and arts integration. The Teacher Education Program implements Core Principles that focus on equity and justice-oriented education. The Department has an active Solidarity Committee to support and guide work on equity and anti-racist education in the Teacher Education Program.



About the College

The College of Education offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including licensure, endorsement, and certificate programs, many of which are regularly ranked among the best in the nation.  Students study with our world-renowned faculty who are the leaders in their fields.  Our college is comprised of four departments: Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, Psychological and Quantitative Foundations, Counselor Education, and Teaching and Learning.  The College houses several Centers that support work in critical areas of education, including UI REACH, Iowa Reading Research Center, Scanlan Center for School Mental Health, and the Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development. Education Requirement:

An earned master’s degree by August 1, 2023 in Art Education or a related discipline.

Required Qualifications:

(1) Teaching experience in elementary art or secondary art; (2) demonstrated commitment to working and collaborating with culturally, linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse populations; (3) experience in building partnerships with local schools and communities.



 

Desirable Qualifications:

(1) Evidence of effective teaching abilities in teacher education in higher education; (2) licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in Art Education; (3) demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and anti-racist teacher education; (4) experience in design education and/or arts integration; (5) terminal degree in Art Education or related discipline.
