Position Description:

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track position in statistics at the rank of assistant professor starting August 16, 2023.

Applicants must complete a Ph.D. in statistics or a related area prior to August 16, 2023.  Candidates must be free to assume the duties of this position and be legally able to work in the United States on that date.  Excellent communication skills are essential.

Research interests in areas of statistics are desirable.  These include causal inference, statistical computing, statistical machine learning, visualization, and many others.  Successful applicants will show promise of excellence in scholarly research and teaching, as well as interest in research collaboration.  Opportunities abound for interdisciplinary research in medicine and public health, economics, environmental sciences, engineering, law and justice, and other areas.

Applications should include a letter of interest; a current CV; a Statement on Research; a Statement on Teaching; a Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Ph.D. thesis title and abstract; publications and manuscripts in progress; graduate transcripts; and a list of references, including names and contact information.

Three letters of reference are required.  Letters should particularly address the applicant’s potential for excellence in teaching.  Upon submission of the online application materials, references will be notified by email with directions for their letter submissions.

The Department currently has 14 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 2 instructional-track faculty, including four Fellows of the American Statistical Association.  The Ph.D. degree is offered in statistics, with concentration areas in actuarial science/financial mathematics, biostatistics, data science, and probability/mathematical statistics; the M.S. degrees are offered in actuarial science, data science, and statistics; and the B.S. degrees are offered in actuarial science, data science, and statistics.  Research interests of current faculty include modern computational statistics, statistical genetics, spatial statistics, Bayesian inference, time series, categorical data analysis, bioinformatics, analysis of medical images, data visualization, statistical learning, and actuarial science.  The Department maintains both Linux and Windows computer networks and has invested in the University’s new high performance computing cluster ( For additional information about the Department, please refer to the web site:
