Position Description:

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Iowa seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member in the area of strategic communication. A research program that emphasizes quantitative approaches is preferred. Potential areas of research focus include political communication, health communication, science and environmental communication, or international communication.



Professional experience in strategic communication is desirable, with a specific background in one or more of the following areas: social media marketing, content marketing, and/or strategic communication campaigns. We are especially interested to hear from candidates who have experience in social media and/or multimedia storytelling for brands or nonprofit organizations.



The successful candidate will teach within the School’s undergraduate strategic communication curriculum. Potential courses include content marketing, social media marketing, data analytics, strategic communication writing, or strategic communication campaigns, as well as courses in the popular event management and nonprofit leadership certificate programs. The candidate may also teach and mentor graduate students in both the PhD program and the online Master’s degree program in strategic communication.

The expectations of tenure-track faculty are 40% teaching (2 courses per semester), 40% research or professional creative activity, and 20% university and professional service.



The appointment will begin August 16, 2023.

Education Requirement:

Doctoral degree in mass communication or related discipline by the start of the appointment.

Required Qualifications:

Teaching experience at the university level.

Desirable Qualifications:

Professional experience in strategic communication; expertise in quantitative methods.
