Position Description:

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa invites applications for one full-time Associate (non-tenure track) position with faculty fringe benefits. This teaching position is a 12-month appointment and renewable every three years. The preferred start date is August 1, 2022. Applications are sought from candidates with a demonstrated potential for outstanding teaching of basic microbiology with an emphasis on the relevance to human health and diseases.



The selected candidate will teach about 2/3 of undergraduate General Microbiology lecture (MICR:2157, Fall semester), General Microbiology Laboratory (MICR:2158, both Spring and Fall semesters), and about 1/3 of Dental Microbiology (MICR:8230, Fall semester). In the undergraduate and dental Microbiology lecture courses, students will be introduced to basic concepts commonly used in microbiology and biomedical research labs.  Duties of this position include course development, teaching, and professional development.



This Associate will also assist with the advising of 8-9 undergraduates in the NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Microbiology during 10 weeks in the summer. The REU program seeks to foster the careers of the next generation of microbiologists by providing an intensive 10-week research experience for bright and ambitious undergraduates who are considering a PhD in microbiology or an allied discipline. The long-standing REU program has been well established in the Department, which is directed by a senior faculty member and assisted by an experienced staff member in the Department. Recruitment and selection emphasize students from groups that are underrepresented in the biological sciences. The Associate’s REU duties will include helping with recruitment and selection of student participants, mentoring participants over the summer to ensure they have a good experience, helping to write NSF funding proposals and progress reports, and keeping abreast of best practices in undergraduate education. Some travel to conferences may be required.

Education Requirement:

A PhD degree in Microbiology or a closely related discipline is required.

Required Qualifications:

Laboratory-based research experience is required. 



Demonstrated potential in the following areas: teaching excellence, teaching across multiple content areas, teaching across multiple formats (lecture, laboratory, etc.), engaging students using creative pedagogy, and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds; enhancing creativity through diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia.
