Position Description:

The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Iowa invites applicants for a full-time tenure track acting faculty appointment at the Assistant or Associate level beginning Fall 2021. We seek an artist who is passionate about teaching, collaborating, and who is committed to partnering with the faculty to continue reshaping our program to be inclusive and diverse. Additionally, we seek an individual who embraces innovation in stage, screen and digital media.



Position Description  



Demonstrated excellence in teaching graduate and undergraduate acting courses in action-based techniques such as but not limited to Meisner, Susan Batson, or other contemporary techniques. Courses will be determined by the needs of the program and the candidate’s specialties such as Acting for the Camera, Career Preparation, Shakespeare, Digital Media and other contemporary methodologies. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to mentor talent in the early years of their professional development. The position requires the ability to understand, communicate and effectively interact with people across cultures both inside and outside the classroom. 



Faculty play an active part of our production season; coaching, directing, regularly advising and responding to students’ production work, serving on graduate actor thesis committees, assisting with undergraduate and graduate recruitment, and participating in departmental and university service responsibilities. Professional creative work outside the university and/or research/publication is expected.



The ideal candidate will have a substantial record of creative work at the professional level and strong ties to the profession

Desired Scholarly Impact



The Professor of Acting provides a high level of teaching and production experience that benefits undergraduate and graduate students planning careers in a highly competitive field.  As the lead acting instructor for the department, the individual will be responsible for assisting the Head of Acting in maintaining and developing the acting curriculum.  Industry and job opportunities have increased significantly with the expansion of web-based content and the rise of non-network producing organizations (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon). The Acting Professor must be well versed in action-based technique that will incorporate current cultural paradigm shifts with a vision to developing training that empowers and affirms the face of the new digital and culturally diverse industry.  They will contribute a practical focus that: addresses the changes in the industry; demonstrates sensitivity to new approaches in casting; reveals a knowledge of trends in contemporary play scripts, which are embracing issues surrounding race, the LGBTQ community, and breaking the norms of “types” and “body types.”  Furthermore, they will help the program to examine and adjust curriculum to be more inclusive of those coming from BIPOC, differently-abled, and non-hetero-normative life experiences, particularly transgender and gender fluid students.

Education Requirement:

MFA/PHD or extensive professional experience equivalent to a terminal degree.

Required Qualifications:

A strong and active record of performance and/or scholarship



At least 3 years teaching acting at the college or professional level beyond the TA level.



Trained in action-based technique.



Ability to direct mainstage productions.



A working knowledge of the dramatic literature of one or more of the following: African-American, Latinx, Indigenous, or Asian-American theatre.

Desirable Qualifications:

Ability to teach one or more of the following: Acting for the Camera, Career Prep, Devised Theatre, Shakespeare, Undergraduate Directing and or Graduate Directing course, Intimacy Direction.
