Position Description:

Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Division Chief

The University of Iowa department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as chief of its Division of Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine.  This position is available at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure-track or clinical-track opportunity. The division chief will have a clear vision for advancing the specialty, experience collaborating with anesthesiologists and other colleagues, and demonstrated leadership skills in academic medicine.

Division Chief Role

The division chief will be responsible for actualizing our tripartite mission--clinical care, education, and research. These responsibilities include:

  • Leading regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine clinical operations to ensure consistently high-quality patient care with efficient and innovative utilization of clinical and material resources

  • Promotion effective collaborations among divisional faculty and other clinical and research scientists across campus

  • Facilitating undergraduate and graduate medical education in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine

  • Recruiting new faculty to the division and supporting their career development

  • Leading innovative scholarship in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine

Internal Resources

  • Protected administrative time to support goal-directed personal and division-related professional development

  • Seed funding for research as well as statistical and clinical trial support

  • Opportunity to participate in the development and refinement of simulation models for graduate and postgraduate education in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine

  • Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship (ACGME) accreditation is in progress

  • Opportunity to participate in Regional Anesthesia Study Center of Iowa (RASCI) ultrasound workshops

  • Active clinical research program, including participation in international, multi-center trials

  • University of Iowa Pain Research Program, which includes the opportunity to interact and collaborate with pre-clinical and clinical investigators

  • NIH-funded Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, which includes collaboration with investigators from all 11 colleges on campus

  • Spacious ambulatory surgery center with high volume of peripheral nerve block and home-going catheter procedures

Education Requirement:

  • Qualified candidates must show successful completion of an approved residency program in anesthesiology

  • Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Iowa

  • Candidates must demonstrate experience working effectively in a diverse environment


  • Candidates must be board-certified in Anesthesiology (or non-US Board equivalent)
