Position Description:

INTERNAL SEARCH



The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) seeks two innovative and collaborative professors to lead the area of Arts & Humanities and the area of Natural, Mathematical, & Social Sciences within CLAS.  The position will begin no later than January 1, 2020.  These Associate Deans will:




  • Manage employees, and make strategic decisions, and budgetary choices across a span of departments.

  • Oversee promotion and tenure, merit evaluation, new faculty orientation, annual and peer reviews, departmental reviews, and contract renewals.

  • Engage in faculty recruitment, mentoring, and conflict resolution in support of faculty excellence.

  • Support professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.

  • Serve on the Dean’s Executive Leadership team and participate in strategic planning, routine problem-solving, and management processes.

  • Coordinate with Human Resources and other University offices when grievances are filed.

  • Work effectively within a culture of shared governance to ensure the timely review, approval, and implementation of new academic initiatives.

Education Requirement:

Terminal degree.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current tenured faculty member at the rank of Professor in CLAS.

  • Prior or current administrative experience in an academic setting.

  • Demonstrated experience to equal opportunity, working with diverse faculty, staff, and students, and promoting a diverse and inclusive environment.

  • Prior or current responsibility in managing and organizing resources and establishing priorities.

  • The candidates of choice will be required to have their tenure home in a department or school within the area they will lead (i.e. one candidate from the Arts & Humanities and one candidate from the Natural, Mathematical, & Social Sciences).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience on College or University-wide faculty governance committees.    

  • Experience proposing, implementing, and managing change at a high level.

  • Experience leading or participating in initiatives that require strategic thinking, long-term planning, collaboration, and effective communication across multiple departments/schools/divisions.
