Position Description:

INTERNAL SEARCH



The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive strategy for advancing academic innovation, new educational opportunities for multi-generational learners, and other program initiatives that reflect the missions of CLAS and the University of Iowa.  The position will begin no later than January 1, 2020.  The Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives will:




  • Act as a liaison between the CLAS Dean’s Office and departments regarding the development of strategic plans and the implementation of new strategic initiatives at the departmental, collegiate, or university levels.

  • Work in close collaboration with the Dean, other Associate Deans, colleagues in the CLAS Dean’s Office, and other campus academic leaders to enhance the College’s efforts and outcomes in strategic initiatives.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the University to lead strategic initiatives as well as develop, implement, and evaluate short/long-range goals and objectives.

  • Serve as CLAS contact for specialized requests from the Board of Regents, central University offices as well as support for accreditation.

  • Serve on the Dean’s Executive Leadership team and participate in strategic planning, routine problem-solving, and management processes.

  • Pursue external partnerships, grants, and other forms of support, as appropriate, for new academic programs and other strategic initiatives.

  • Work effectively within a culture of shared governance to ensure the timely review, approval, and implementation of new academic initiatives.

Education Requirement:

Terminal degree.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current tenured faculty member at the rank of Professor in CLAS.

  • Prior or current administrative experience in an academic setting.

  • Demonstrated experience to equal opportunity; working with diverse faculty, staff, and students; and promoting a diverse and inclusive environment.

  • Experience leading or participating in initiatives that require strategic thinking, long-term planning, and effective communication. 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience on College or University-wide faculty governance committees.    

  • Experience proposing, implementing, and managing change at a high level.

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results by providing strategic direction and leadership.
