Position Description:

The University of Iowa Department of Geographical & Sustainability Sciences invites applications for the position of Lecturer. We seek a highly motivated educator interested in innovative, evidence-based strategies to teaching physical geography and/or geographic information science (e.g., flipped classroom, team-based learning, experiential learning, online and blended delivery).  Teaching will include both lower and middle division courses, as well as in-class and on-line formats.

The maximum expected course load is three courses per semester, with 20% of the incumbent's time to be devoted to service activities within the department and the college (e.g., serve on the Undergraduate Program Committee and to help coordinate educational activities associated with the newly restructured Sustainability Office).

Courses to be taught could include, but are not limited to: GEOG:1020 The Global Environment; GEOG:1050 Foundations of GIScience; GEOG:1065 Introduction to Spatial Analysis; GEOG:2013 Introduction to Sustainability; GEOG:2110 7 Billion & Counting: Intro to Pop Dynamics; GEOG:2310 Introduction to Climatology; GEOG:1030 Our Digital Earth; GEOG:2950 Environmental Conservation. Final course assignments depend on the capabilities of the successful candidate.

Education Requirement:

PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Geography or related field at the time of appointment

Required Qualifications:

Ability to teach introductory courses in physical geography and/or geographic information science

Proven record of teaching excellence

Interest in evidence-based and online education

Desirable Qualifications:

Ability to teach intermediate courses in physical geography and/or geographic information science

History of offering successful online courses

Knowledge of evidence-based educational practices

Active research program in physical geography or geographic information science
