Position Description:

Tenured or Tenure-Track Faculty Position - Associate or Assistant Professor

The University of Iowa Department of Biostatistics invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor, with research expertise in the area of clinical trials.  Exceptional applicants will also be considered at the rank of Assistant Professor.  The successful candidate will hold a leadership appointment in the Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center (CTSDMC).  

The CTSDMC was founded in 1989, and currently employs 36 full-time staff.  The Center is directed by Dr. Christopher Coffey.  The mission of the CTSDMC is to facilitate innovative multicenter clinical trials by providing high quality infrastructure support (http://www.ctsdmc.org). The CTSDMC has assisted in the development and implementation of over 25 multicenter clinical trials and two large epidemiological studies. It serves as the data coordinating center (DCC) for the Clinical Islet Transplantation (CIT) Consortium, sponsored by NIAID and NIDDK, and as the DCC for the Network for Excellence in Neuroscience Clinical Trials (NeuroNEXT), an NINDS-funded network to implement phase 2 neuroscience studies. In each of their projects, the CTSDMC has provided leadership in study design, data collection, data management, project management, clinical site monitoring, quality management, safety monitoring, statistical design and analysis, and data dissemination and sharing.

The successful candidate will be involved in teaching, service, and research.  The Department of Biostatistics is currently comprised of 16 primary faculty, 13 adjunct/secondary faculty, and approximately 40 graduate students (http://cph.uiowa.edu/biostat/).  Existing departmental methodological research interests include clinical trials, computational statistics, Bayesian modeling and inference, statistical genetics and genomics, bioinformatics, informatics, machine and statistical learning, spatial and spatio-temporal modeling, time series analysis, survival data analysis, longitudinal data analysis, network analysis, integrative analysis, personalized medicine, causal inference, comparative effectiveness studies, high-dimensional data analysis, missing data techniques, nonparametric modeling, model selection, epidemic modeling, and syndromic surveillance. 

The Department includes the CTSDMC and provides leadership to the Center for Public Health Statistics (http://cph.uiowa.edu/cphs/).  The Department offers MS and PhD degrees in Biostatistics, as well as an MPH degree specializing in Biostatistics.  Computational resources include extensive Linux and Windows networks, along with dedicated nodes in the University’s high performance computing cluster (http://hpc.uiowa.edu).  Department faculty members enjoy strong collaborative relationships with other departments in the College of Public Health, as well as the Carver College of Medicine, the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Veteran's Administration Medical Center, and other groups across campus.  Information about The University of Iowa is available at http://www.uiowa.edu.

Education Requirement:

The position requires a PhD or equivalent in Biostatistics, Statistics, or a related area.

Required Qualifications:

Evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary, collaborative academic environment. 

Expertise and experience in the design and conduct of clinical trials, and the statistical analyses of data arising from clinical trials. 

For a tenured appointment, an established record of achievement in research and teaching is expected, along with a record of extramural funding.
