Position Description:

                                                                         ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN SOCIAL WORK



 The University of Iowa, School of Social Work seeks dynamic candidates for a tenure-track assistant professor position (9-month academic year appointment) beginning in August 2018. Candidates should demonstrate potential for a strong program of research.

The School of Social Work offers programs at the BA, MSW, and PhD levels, with distance education programs around the state of Iowa (BA and MSW in Des Moines, and MSW in Sioux City and the Quad Cities).  Operating from a strengths-based and systems perspectives, the School prepares our graduates to be culturally competent scholars and practitioners committed to social justice and social work values and ethics. The School is home to the National Resource Center on Family Centered Practice, the University’s Aging Studies Program, and the Certificate Program in Critical Cultural Competence. Responsibilities:



The successful candidate will work with faculty and students to implement the mission of the University of Iowa and the School of Social Work through the following:




  • Sustain an active program of research as evidenced by peer reviewed publications and conference presentations

  • Pursue external funding to support a focused program of research

  • Teach and mentor diverse students in the School’s programs

  • Provide service in support of the School’s and University's mission

  • Add intellectual diversity and cultural richness to the School

Education Requirement:

  • PhD in social work or related field in hand by August 15, 2018 (with the dissertation successfully defended by June 2018)

  • A MSW degree

Required Qualifications:

  • A MSW degree is required with a minimum of two years post MSW practice experience

  • Evidence of a strong research agenda with demonstrated potential to conduct research and publish in a substantive area of social work

  • Potential for securing external research funding

  • Demonstrated potential for teaching across social work educational levels (BASW, MSW and PhD)

  • Demonstrated attention to human diversity and/or cultural competence in teaching, research, or service

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach macro social work practice or research at the foundation or advanced program level

  • Scholarly publications in refereed journals
