Position Description:

The Division of General Internal Medicine with the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa-Carver College of Medicine is seeking to hire a physician-investigator for an appointment as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the Tenure track.  The applicant would serve as the first Director of the Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Center within the François M. Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Iowa-Carver College of Medicine.  The Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center is comprised of nearly 200 researchers and has a long history of research program development and mentoring in a spirit of independence infused with shared ideals, common goals, and collegial interaction.  The center has modeled a culture of collaboration, team research and mentoring that has been emulated across the UI campus and adopted by most successful academic research institutions.  In line with the deep collaborative tradition at the University of Iowa, the center fosters new partnerships among programs, investigators, and cores, both within and outside the university in areas such as drug, device, biotech development and health services research.



With a VA HSR&D-funded Center of Innovation, a growing College of Public Health and vibrant university, opportunities to collaborate and recruit abound.  The success candidate will work closely with the Division Directors of General Internal Medicine and Cardiology along with the Director of The Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center to expand the research enterprise across the full-range of cardiovascular outcomes research.



The successful candidate must have an MD degree and must be able to demonstrate evidence of advanced training in the area of cardiovascular and/or neurovascular outcomes research including expertise in health economics research, epidemiology, biostatistics, cost-effectiveness, shared medical decision making, or another related methodology.  Demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce/academic environment is also required.  The successful candidate must be authorized to work in the U.S.



Individuals hired at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher are expected to have a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and an established track record of independent research funding.  Candidates with a history of successful mentorship would be preferred.



Investigators with experience in the following areas are highly desirable: cardiovascular outcomes, neurovascular outcomes, epidemiology, and health services research.  Physicians with experience in the following clinical areas are highly desirable: primary care, consultative medicine, and inpatient medicine.
