Position Description:

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics seeks a Director for the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Allergy and Immunology at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor on the tenure or non-tenure track. The Director will lead the Division’s clinical and teaching services as well as provide leadership to the research program. The Director will benefit from significant institutional resources and will have the opportunity to recruit additional faculty. The Division currently has 9 faculty and anticipates growing significantly in the next few years following the opening of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is one of the top biomedical research institutions in the nation and ranked 39th overall and 18th among public medical schools for NIH funding in FY15.  The U.S. News and World Report research ranking places the College 12th among public institutions for FY2016, and the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics ranked 22nd overall and 10th in NIH funding among all public pediatric departments nationwide in FY15. The ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program at the Children’s Hospital trains 43 pediatric residents.

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics comprises the medical and research staff of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.  University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is one of the nation’s top-ranked pediatric care and research institutions. It is the only university-affiliated hospital in Iowa devoted solely to the care of infants, children, adolescents and young adults, and is Iowa’s only accredited Level 1 Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Center.  In 2016-17, University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital ranked in eight pediatric specialties in the Best Children’s Hospitals U.S. News and World Report, including cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, neonatology, nephrology, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology, and is the only hospital in Iowa to be nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report for children’s care. A new 189-bed children’s hospital is scheduled to open in 2017.

Education Requirement:

Must hold M.D. or D.O. or equivalent

Required Qualifications:

Tenure track candidates must have evidence of scholarly investigation

Demonstrated job-related experience with, and/or commitment to, diversity in the work place

Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Iowa


Board certified Pediatrics Allergy/Immunology and/or Pulmonology

Desirable Qualifications:

5 or more years of experience in an academic health system

Strength in teaching and scholarly pursuits

Ability to develop and implement clinical programs

Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

Demonstrated history of externally funded scholarly activity
