Position Description:




The Carver College of Medicine at The University of Iowa seeks candidates for the position of Head, Department of Radiology. The Carver College of Medicine is part of a major research university and ranks 12th among public medical schools in National Institutes of Health funding. The College and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are equal partners in UI Health Care. The hospital is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States. It is also home to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, ranked as one of America’s best Children’s Hospitals by U.S. News and World Reports, and the Center for Disabilities and Development. The Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center is situated in close proximity. The Department of Radiology has a distinguished teaching, research and clinical faculty, with nearly $7 million in extramural research funding. It is home to a number of outstanding clinicians who are national and international leaders in their respective subspecialty areas.

The Head of the Department is the leader of all aspects of the Department’s enterprise, serves as the spokesperson for the faculty, and represents the Department in interactions with the College, UI Health Care, and practitioners throughout the state, as well as nationally. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment and appointments; educational, clinical and research programs; fiscal planning and management; philanthropy and short- and long-term strategic planning.

Education Requirement:

MD degree or equivalent

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have previous records consistent with appointment as a tenured Professor of Radiology. This includes an outstanding record of accomplishments in research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate will have the demonstrated capacity to foster an environment in which excellence in teaching, research and scholarship flourish, as well as experience in and a commitment to developing and leading clinical and research programs. Candidates must have a record of innovative and effective administrative and fiscal leadership, national stature in academic Radiology, a record of excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce, experience with philanthropy, and positive interactions with students, staff and faculty.


Must be eligible for licensure in Iowa and certified by the American Board of Radiology.
