Jobcode Postdoctoral Research Scholar
Working Title Postdoctoral Research Scholar - School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability
Details

The Tectonics & Basin Analysis Lab, led by Dr. Emily Finzel at the University of Iowa, is seeking applications for a postdoctoral scholar in the field of sedimentary geology, tectonics, and basin analysis. The position is initially for one academic year, with the potential for renewal based on performance and funding. Start dates are flexible.

The postdoctoral scholar will:

  • Conduct research focused on sedimentary basin evolution, tectonics, and/or sediment provenance.
  • Apply methods that may include sedimentologic and stratigraphic analysis, detrital geochronology, geochemistry, and petrographic or heavy-mineral provenance analysis.
  • Participate in laboratory sample preparation and analytical workflows associated with sedimentary provenance and basin analysis.
  • Analyze and synthesize geologic datasets and contribute to the preparation of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
  • Contribute to laboratory activities and assist with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Participate in the broader research and educational activities of the Tectonics & Basin Analysis Lab and the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability.

About the Lab

The Tectonics & Basin Analysis Lab, led by Dr. Emily Finzel, investigates sedimentary processes in modern and ancient basins and uses the sedimentary record to understand the evolution of tectonic systems. Our research integrates sedimentology and stratigraphy, geologic mapping, detrital geochronology, geochemistry, heavy-mineral analysis, and petrographic provenance techniques to reconstruct sediment sources, sediment-routing systems, basin development, and tectonic histories.

The lab has access to extensive sample-preparation facilities and University of Iowa analytical infrastructure, including scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, laser-ablation ICP-MS, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF).

Education Requirement

PhD or equivalent in geology, geoscience, earth science, or a closely related field, with specialization in sedimentary geology, tectonics, basin analysis, geochronology, geochemistry, or a related discipline.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with one or more analytical approaches relevant to basin analysis and provenance studies, such as detrital geochronology, sedimentary geochemistry, petrography, heavy-mineral analysis, or mineral characterization.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and synthesize field, laboratory, and/or quantitative datasets.
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis and scientific computing or statistical software.
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications or demonstrated potential for publication.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, collaborative, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability and willingness to mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers.
