The laboratory of Dr. Maria Spies is seeking a full-time Post-Baccalaureate Research Intern to join the research group that applies tools of single-molecule biochemistry and structural biology to study fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying DNA replication, recombination and repair, as well as dysregulation of these mechanisms in cancer and repeat expansion diseases.

The Research Intern will support lab operations and perform experiments under general and direct supervision. This position offers the opportunity to develop proficiency with advanced biochemical and biophysical techniques related to the structural and functional analysis of protein-nucleic acid interactions.

Education Required

Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field

Required Qualifications

Basic knowledge of the following:     

  • Recombinant protein expression in bacteria
  • Experience with protein purification and characterization
  • Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, and gel electrophoresis
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous work published or presented surrounding metabolic control mechanisms.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Prior research experience in protein and nucleic acids biochemistry
  • Experience working independently while maintaining accurate research records
  • Strong interest in molecular mechanisms of genome stability
