Join our Team! The University of Iowa Pharmaceutical Department is looking for a PRN Clinical Pharmacist to work in our Acute Care Pharmacies.

The PRN clinical pharmacist is responsible for all aspects of medication preparation and dispensing throughout the institution. The position shifts will be available on an as needed basis and may include weekdays, weekends, and evenings in adult dispensing areas, including Central Pharmacy, IV Admixture Pharmacy, Adult Satellite, and OR satellite. The clinical pharmacist oversees preparation and dispensing of sterile and non-sterile products, to all acute care service areas and ambulatory clinics. In addition, the clinical pharmacist completes order verification and provides therapeutic drug monitoring for select patient populations from the Adult Satellite. The position provides an opportunity to precept pharmacy students on rotations.

Position Responsibilities:

·    Medication Preparation and Dispensing

a) Oversee pharmacy technicians while staffing in dispensing locations.

b) Serve as a contact for medication distribution questions for pharmacy team members and other healthcare professionals. 

c) Safely and accurately verify sterile and non-sterile compounded products following the USP<800>, USP <797>, and SUP <795> guidelines. 

d) Check pre-packaged medications, automated dispensing cabinet batches, floor stock, emergency drug trays, and ambulance kits.

e) Troubleshoot automation utilized in dispensing locations. 

f) Identification and assistance in resolution of mediation system issues. 

g) Assist with inventory control including controlled substances. 

h) Reporting medication errors and process improvement suggestions. 

I) Serve on intra and interdepartmental committees as needed. 

    Order Verification and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM)

     a) Evaluate medication orders to ensure accuracy and appropriateness.

     b) Complete pharmacokinetic assessment of drug dosing on appropriate patients.

     c) Carry out, through interventions and education, protocol antibiotic and MUE      initiatives.

     d) Provide drug information to other healthcare professionals.

     e) Identify high risk medication therapy defined admission criteria and reviews the appropriate Selective Monitoring System (SMS) protocol.

 

Complete required departmental competencies.

Educational Services

a)      Serve as preceptor for pharmacy residents and students on rotations sponsored by the UIHC Department of Pharmaceutical Care.

b) Present at and participate in other educational programs sponsored by the Department of Pharmaceutical Care, the College of Pharmacy, other UIHC departments, and state and national organizations.

Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements: 

  • Pharm. D. (Doctor of Pharmacy) degree or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy.
  • Current licensure by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners is required. Includes those eligible for obtaining this licensure.

Experience Requirements: 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Job related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence. 
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Experience in hospital pharmacy setting is highly desired. 
  • One year of applicable pharmacy experience is preferred. 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or eligibility for completing BLS certification.
