The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is looking to hire a temporary Accountant, who will assist in providing accounting oversight for the department.

Specific job duties and tasks will include:

·          -May assist with reviewing unit budget information.

·          -Monitor accounts/expenditures; reconcile statements.

·          -Assist with the preparation of accounting reports and other financial information for other units.

·          -Monitors allocation of budgetary and other resources; preparation of annual budgets and projections; prepare monthly budget reports, and

·          -Monitor budgets from all sources of funding, including federally funded grant accounts; prepare budget projections. 

·          -Complete basic and some complex recurring reconciliations and reporting following pre-established processes.

·          -Minimal to moderate involvement in month-end and year-end accounting/reporting.

·          -Assist in the preparation of annual grant reports and assist in grant renewal applications. Assist in year-end accounting/reporting. 

·          -May perform basic, limited and primarily routine analysis.

·          -Prepare routine, standardized reports following pre-established processes.

·          -Use basic to moderate knowledge of financial systems.

·          -Monitor, reconcile, and provide projections of laboratory and department operating budgets and grants.

·          -Assist with providing faculty and staff with information regarding conformance to University and Departmental purchasing policies and procedures.

·          -Provide oversight and maintain accurate records on all departmental and grant accounts. 

·          -Basic knowledge of GAAP accounting standards.

·          -May contribute to implementation of policies and procedures related to accounting and reporting standards.

·          -Maintain records documentation of accounting transactions.

·          -Review appropriateness of expenditures in accordance with federal agency requirements.

·          -Compile and maintain computer and paper files of purchasing and billings transactions.

·          -Maintain inventory and ordering of all office supplies. 

·          -Initiate basic and/or routine original and correcting journal entries.

·          -May review and approve routine transactions. 

·          -Open/close accounts.

·          -Approve procurement card vouchers. Initiate and process accounting entries. 

·          -May provide functional direction or supervision for staff.

·          -May assist with providing training.

·          -Provide supervision of undergraduate Accounting Interns. 

-Supervision is received from the department head and the departmental administrator.

Education requirement: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required qualifications:

·          -The candidate is required to have 6 months to 1 year of accounting experience

·          -Proficiency with MS Office programs

 

·          -Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable qualifications:

·          -Experience working with federal grants is desirable.

·          -Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures, regulations, and data warehouse applications is desired.

·          -Experience with billing/accounts payable and purchasing, the UI General Ledger System, and HRIS is desirable.
