The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a patient centered PRN Sonographer to perform a variety of ultrasound procedures/non-invasive procedures to support our Urbandale clinic.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler.
- Consult with the interpreting physician regarding the ultrasound exam findings.
- Document exam information as required by departmental standards.
- Evaluate images of ultrasound exams and determine if the exam is of diagnostic quality.
- Assist with and provide ultrasound guidance for intraoperative and invasive procedures.
- Provide information and instructions to patient, patient’s family or others, regarding the nature of requested diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
- Perform patient care techniques including skin preparation, I.V. placement, vital sign monitoring and recording, and basic life support; prepare and administer contrast material to patients.
- Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
- Instruct and evaluate sonography students on the operation of diagnostic equipment.
- Instruct medical residents on operation of diagnostic equipment.
- Maintain quality control with the ultrasound section in accordance with accepted departmental standards.
- Determine equipment malfunctions and contact repair service.
- Perform equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.
- Maintain certification as specified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

Pay Grade: 38
Salary: $29.60 - $53.56 per hour (based on years of experience)

Percent of Time: PRN/Hourly - Must be available every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month, other hours to be completed as variable hours between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Monday – Friday; No weekends, no holidays and no on-call time. (minimum of 20 hours per month)
Location: Urbandale, IA and other clinical locations based on clinical need/hours (training will likely take place at our Johnston, IA clinic until the Urbandale clinic opens in late 2025)
Qualifications:
Education Required: Requires completion of one of the following educational pathways:
- CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, OR
- Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e. Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography, OR
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Cardiac Ultrasonography.
- Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment in the specialty area of Pediatric Cardiac Echocardiography
Experience Required:
- Requires registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment in at least one specialty area (i.e. Abdomen or Obstetrics/Gynecology) with preference given for two or more specialties.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Driver’s License and ability to meet University of Iowa Fleet Safety Standards is required.
- Previous pediatric experience.
Highly Desirable Qualifications:
- Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty area of Pediatric Echocardiography (PE). Not a requirement during application.
- Experience in performing pediatric echocardiograms.
- Experience in performing fetal echocardiograms.
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous EPIC experience.
- Membership in appropriate professional organizations desired.
- Willingness to train in additional modalities.
