Working Title Simulated Patient - Center for Procedural Skills and Simulation

The Center for Procedural Skills and Simulation at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC) is seeking to hire individuals to serve as Simulated Patients (SPs) for simulation-based educational activities designed for UIHC learners of all levels.  Currently seeking a diverse population of SPs from all backgrounds, gender identity, age, and body habitus to participate in activities based in the Center for Procedural Skills and Simulation located in UIHC.

SPs work with learners one-on-one or in small groups in a simulated healthcare setting to advance communication and interprofessional skills, demonstrate non-invasive physical procedures, or a combination of both.

SPs are required to master specific skills including learning and memorizing case studies specific to each event and consistently and accurately portraying the case with learner(s) while observing learners’ behaviors and demonstration of skills determined by faculty.  SPs may be required to assess learner’s performance of the required skills using standardized measurement tools or provide educationally constructive feedback (written or verbal) within a structured format as trained by staff and faculty.  Sessions with learners may be video recorded and will be utilized for educational purposes only.  All SPs will be expected to maintain confidentiality of all case materials and interactions with learners.

Please note – this is a temporary, part-time position with sporadic hours on an as-needed basis.  Activities typically take place Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00AM and 5:00pm.  Sessions occur year-round.  Pay rates:  $12/hour to $20/hour for most assignments.  Acting experience is not required, but welcome.  Medical knowledge is not required.

Hired SPs are required to attend ongoing and regularly scheduled group training sessions with other SPs and a trainer.

SPs must be comfortable wearing examination ponchos, gowns, robes, and/or drapes over standard undergarments (e.g., bras, full-coverage underwear) while working with students, and will allow students to perform non-invasive physical exam maneuvers on their bodies (e.g., listening to the heart and lungs on skin with a stethoscope, pressing on the abdomen with the pads of their fingers on the SP’s skin, looking into eyes and ears with medical equipment.)

Punctuality, reliability, good interpersonal skills, and an ability to follow written and spoken instructions are essential.  A valid email address and internet access are required.  Basic computer skills (e.g., typing a short paragraph, opening an email attachment, clicking on a web address, checking boxes on an electronic checklist) are required.
