The University of Iowa, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) will host their third Iowa National Summer Transportation Institute (INSTI) for students with and without disabilities. The INSTI will be residential this year with students staying on campus in dorms from June 18th – June 30th. INSTI is open to 16 - 20 students attending public and private schools throughout Iowa entering 7th, 8th, or 9th grade in the 2023-24 school year.

The Night Mentors provide support for the students attending the INSTI. Responsibilities of the Night Mentors include providing individualized and small group support for participants as needed. They will be the support staff on duty overnight. 

Many activities are provided by transportation professionals through tours to Iowa transportation businesses and labs, and through guest speakers who present and arrange activities on a wide variety of topics during the day. The INSTI Night Mentor supports these activities and facilitates the learning of participants. 

The Night Mentor has a minimum or 13-years (associate degree) of education. Preference is given to individuals currently or recently attending college and to individuals with previous experience working with junior high and high school youth.

First Aid and CPR training is required.

 

*This is a temporary full-time position from June 18th through June 30th plus orientation from June 7-9. Salary for this position is $15.00 per hour based on qualification. Positions are for night shift (Midnight to 8:00 a.m.)

Duties:

  • Reports directly to the Project Director
  • Performs duties assigned by the Academic Program Coordinator and Project Director
  • Reports all incidents in and around the institute to the Project Director
  • Reports to the Academic Program Coordinator or Project Director any cases beyond their disciplinary efforts (e.g., when students refuse to cooperate)
  • Cooperates fully with the Academic Program Coordinator and Project Director
  • Sets respectable personal standards for students
  • Promotes effective study and living habits
  • Implements University policies
  • Assists with ensuring students are available for field trips
  • Assists with program opening and closing activities
  • Provides support and supervision during all activities including breakfast
  • Supervises students to get up and ready for the day’s activities
  • Provides one-on-one support for the INSTI participants
  • Accompanies participants to activities, as necessary
  • Performs other duties assigned
