Professional and Scientfic FAQ Answers

How do I apply for a specific Professional and Scientific position?

To apply for most P&S positions, you must sign up for a Jobs@UIOWA username and password. Once you have successfully become a member of Jobs@UIOWA, you may use your username and password to log into the system and fill out a General Employment Application.

After completing your General Employment Application, you can perform a job search to find a job you would like to apply for. Click on the job title to view the job's details and "Online Application Options". If you would like to apply, click the "Apply For This Position" button to start the application.

If there is not an "Apply For This Position" button on the job details page, then follow the instructions listed.

How will I know the application requirements for each position?

Please look at the "Online Application Options" section of the Requisition Details page for specific job application requirements. If you do not see "Online Application Options", please look under "Required Applicant Forms".

Where can I find the education and/or experience requirements for each position?

The specific education and experience requirements for each position will be listed under "Job Details" in the job announcement.

How do I view the advertisement of a position after the job is off the job line?

You may only view advertisements for positions that you applied to.

We have added a link named "Position Applied For" on the "View Application" page. This page is found by going to your Application History and clicking on the requisition number. Here you will find your application.

I would like to apply for a P&S position, but I don't have access to the Internet. Where can I apply?

There are internet-ready computers available for public use on the first floor of the University Services Building located at 1 West Prentiss Street in Iowa City.

How will my salary be determined if I am hired?

The minimum rate for the position will be listed for the position. The hiring department will determine your salary based on your related education, experience, and available funds.

What is the pay schedule for P&S positions?

The current pay schedule is available on the Human Resources Classification and Compensation web site under Pay Plans Directory, and also in the University Human Resources office in 102 University Services Building, 1 W. Prentiss Street.

How are individuals selected for interviews?

The department recruiting for the vacancy will review résumés and compare the information to the requirements of the position. The Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity will review and approve the proposed interview list prior to the department beginning the interview process.

Will I be interviewed by one person or several?

This will depend on the hiring department. Most departments will have you interview with more than one person, in a group setting or on an individual basis.

How are the final decision and job offer made?

After the interview process is completed and the information is reviewed by the hiring department, a summary of the information will be submitted for review by the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity. If the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity approves the department's recommended candidate, the hiring department may make a valid job offer. The job offer is usually made verbally and followed by a letter confirming the offer and conditions of employment.

Is there a probation period for professional positions?

Yes, the length will be determined by the type of position.

I am not a University of Iowa employee, but I am part of a Job Search Committee. How should I access the system?

You must sign up for a Jobs @ UIOWA username and password. Once you have done so, the Search Chair will grant you access to the information you'll need to perform your duties. Please contact your Search Chair with any further questions.
