Position Description:

The Department of Health and Human Physiology at The University of Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Health Promotion/Interventionist.  Current health promotion research areas in the department include physical activity, sedentary behaviors, sleep, circadian rhythms, health disparities, behavioral interventions, obesity, cancer, cardiometabolic health, and maternal health. We seek to enhance our existing cross-disciplinary collaborations and build on our departmental strengths in substantive areas of research. Candidates with strong intervention, epidemiology, surveillance and/or determinants focused research programs are encouraged to apply. Substantive areas of interest include but are not limited to: physical activity, sleep, nutrition, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, hypertension, neurological disease, and aging.



In addition to faculty in Health and Human Physiology, there are outstanding opportunities for collaboration with faculty in the Obesity Research and Education Initiative, Aging Mind and Brain Research Initiative, Prevention Research Center, Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center, Abboud Cardiovascular Center, Iowa Neuroscience Institute, and Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. There are also ample opportunities to collaborate with faculty in the Colleges of Public Health, Medicine, Nursing, Engineering, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.  Excellent research space is available in the Department of HHP and state-of-the-art core labs are available in the adjacent Carver College of Medicine.  Salary and start-up support will be highly competitive with other institutions.



At the rank of Assistant Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstrated a record of publishing in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and the potential to establish an active, externally funded research program, mentor graduate students, and teach in his or her area of specialization. At the rank of Associate Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstrated a record of securing extramural research funding and publishing in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and/or books, along with a record of mentoring graduate students and teaching in his or her area of specialization.

Education Requirement:

Terminal doctoral degree (e.g. PhD in Health Promotion, Health Education, Behavioral Science, Behavioral Medicine, Public Health, Kinesiology, or a related field) in hand by the start date (August 19, 2019).

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications for Assistant Professor:  A sustained record of exemplary research productivity in Health Promotion, Health Intervention, or related field.



Required Qualifications for Associate Professor:  Demonstrated excellence in peer-reviewed scholarly publications and in acquiring external funding for a program of scholarly research in Health Promotion, Health Intervention, or related field.

Desirable Qualifications:

2 or more years of postdoctoral experience in Health Promotion, Health Intervention, or related field. Experience in seeking and/or obtaining external research funding. Teaching experience in coursework related to health promotion/intervention. Previous independent teaching experience.
