Position Description:

The Carver College of Medicine at The University of Iowa seeks candidates for the position of Chair, Department of Psychiatry.  The Carver College of Medicine is a part of a major research university and is ranked 13th among public medical schools by U.S. News and World Reports.  The College and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are equal partners in UI Health Care. The hospital is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States and is adjacent to the Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  The Department of Psychiatry has a distinguished teaching, research and clinical faculty with a number of outstanding M.D. and Ph.D. members who are national and international leaders in their respective subspecialty and research areas.  The Department of Psychiatry plays a major role in the Iowa Neuroscience Institute where research is escalating the pace of scientific discovery from the bench through to clinical cures for neuropsychiatric disorders.

The Head of the Department is the leader of all aspects of the Department’s enterprise, serves as the spokesperson for the faculty, and represents the Department in interactions with the College, UI Health Care, and practitioners throughout the state and nationally.  Responsibilities include faculty recruitment and appointments; educational, clinical and research programs; fiscal planning and management; and short- and long-term strategic planning.     

Education Requirement:

Candidates must have previous records consistent with appointment as a Professor of Psychiatry.  This includes an MD degree or equivalent.

Required Qualifications:

  •  A doctorate in medicine (MD or DO) or equivalent degree

  • An academic record consistent with appointment as a tenured Professor

  • Licensed or eligible for medical licensure in Iowa

  • Certification in American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry

  • Evidence of progressive leadership experience

  • Experience and reputation necessary to ensure continuation and enhancement of clinical, education and research mission in the Department of Psychiatry

  • Experience directing a nationally-recognized, extramurally funded research program

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills

  • Experience promoting a diverse workforce


Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams

  • Experience with philanthropy

  • Experience collaborating with state or federal organizations focused on mental health care

  • Demonstrated ability to recruit high quality faculty

  • Demonstrated ability to innovate in educational or clinical care models
