Basic Function and Responsibilities

This position arises as part of ongoing efforts between laboratories to neural injury in rodents. The research assistant will be responsible for performing molecular, behavioral and physiological assays from model organisms. Techniques that will be employed include:

  • gene expression assays

  • genotyping / animal husbandry

  • specific experience in maintaining specialized animal colonies of rodent genetic models of injury and disease

  • tissue culture and DNA extraction

  • sample management

  • Behavioral assays

  • Physiological assays

In addition, the research assistant will be responsible for maintaining the lab. Responsibilities in this area will include:

  • purchasing items for the lab, such as equipment, reagents, and supplies

  • ensuring proper maintenance of lab equipment

  • maintaining animal colonies

  • maintaining detailed and accurate lab protocols and records

  • maintaining detailed and accurate notes of experimental results

  • instructing students and other less experienced laboratory personnel in laboratory procedures and techniques


  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience in the conduct of behavioral sciences research

  • High degree of attention to detail and a high level of organizational skills

  • Minimum of 6 months of progressively responsible experience in a research environment

  • Familiarity with molecular biology approaches through academic coursework and/or through molecular biology lab experience

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Experience working with electronic databases and spreadsheets

  • Experience with routine lab maintenance tasks, such as maintaining lab equipment


  • Experience with molecular genetics lab techniques, including one of the following:
    • PCR
    • DNA extraction and preparation
    • Array hybridization
    • Tissue culture
    • In vivo surgical stereotactic technique
  • Experience working with large sample sizes.
  • Experience training lab personnel and/or students.

This is a temporary positionfor up to 12months depending on funding.
