Other basic functions will be: to conduct experiments and to coordinate and supervise their execution by technicians, students, fellows, and other laboratory staff; to interpret and evaluate research data; to assist the laboratory director in grant proposal and manuscript preparation; to coordinate and supervise the financial administration of multiple federal and private sector grants; and to supervise laboratory staff and students.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Conduct, supervise and train laboratory personnel in the techniques employed in the specific functional unit of the laboratory. For morphology these include: light microscopy (immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, in situ hybridization), laser scanning confocal microscopy, transmission (routine, immunohistochemistry, freeze fracture) and scanning electron microscopy; animal surgery; and photography. For molecular biology these include: preparation of DNA and RNA from ocular tissues and blood; PCR and RT-PCR; electrophoresis; Northern and Southern blot analyses; DNA sequencing; construction of cDNA libraries (normalized, subtracted); in situ hybridization; SSCP; differential display techniques; gene expression analyses; and radiation hybrid analysis. For biochemistry these include: protein and lipid biochemical analyses, protein and lipid isolation and separation, subcellular fractionation, centrifugation, protein assays, SDS-PAGE, Western blot analysis, dot blot analysis, ELISA, chromatography (gel filtration, affinity, LPLC), enzyme activity assays, radiolabeling (in vitro and in vivo) and scintillation counting. For cell culture these include: isolation, maintenance, and propagation of cell lines, lymphocyte proliferation assays, assay/drug screening development, cloning, and co-culture experiments. Will also record lab data; maintain supply inventories and interface with Macintosh and PC computers. Experience with, or demonstrable exposure to, a majority of techniques within any given functional laboratory area is highly desirable.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Design experiments and coordinate responsibilities for the appropriate section of the laboratory among Research Assistants, fellows, residents, visiting scientists and students, and interpret and evaluate results as they are obtained.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Assist the Laboratory Director/Principal Investigator in compilation and evaluation of data, and preparation of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, presentations and grant proposals.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Assist the Laboratory Director/Principal Investigator in choosing new instruments and protocols for the laboratory and oversee maintenance of existing instruments.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Assist in processing and maintaining a large repository of human donor eyes, sera, and blood. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Participate in the acquisition of eyes from human donors on an on-call basis.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Assist the Laboratory Director/Principal Investigator in coordination of grant administration and renewal, and purchase of equipment and reagents.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Supervise technical, clerical and student employees, and direct the flow of personnel within the laboratory.
