Job Duties:
Perform experiments to identify how neurotransmitter levels and receptor expression change synaptic transmission and drug effects in the brainstem using electrophysiological methods including patch-clamp recordings in cell culture or slice, or in vivo extracellular recordings.
Collaborate on complementary experiments to quantitate acute and persistent nociception in anesthetized and conscious laboratory rodents and determine how drugs affect these behaviors using behavioral pharmacological, immunohistochemical, molecular or neurochemical methods.
Manage all or part of a research project including staff selection and scheduling, monitoring of project funds, coordination of data generation and analysis and identification, acquisition and use of equipment and facilities.
Participate in determining research priorities and planning programs of research.
Evaluate veracity of the data to establish relevance to the problem or problems being evaluated and advise the principal investigator.
Prepare research results for publication in progress reports, journals, books and other media including generating complete drafts of manuscripts and figures.
Develop new hypotheses and proposals for research and obtain support for research activities through submission of grant applications to intramural and extramural agencies.
Identify and define problems, solutions to which can be approached through a scientific research process.
