As part of a university-wide initiative, the UI Provost recently announced ten new faculty positions for “cluster hiring” to advance research, education, and outreach on sustainability and the President has identified sustainability as an area of strategic emphasis. This initiative on water-related issues was created to further excellence in sustainability and builds on recent events including.

- the new Iowa Flood Center, created with a legislative appropriation;
- academic strengths in cognate areas of sustainable energy and clean air;
