Position Description:

The University of Iowa, College of Public Health and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center invite applicants for a new faculty position focused on cancer prevention and control. The State of Iowa has the second highest age-adjusted rate of new cancer diagnoses and is one of only two states with an increasing incidence, creating the urgent need for advances in cancer prevention and control. Given the collaborative and interdisciplinary campus, there are numerous opportunities for leadership, collaboration, and conducting impactful research at the University of Iowa. This full-time, open-rank position is for a tenure-track faculty member whose research focuses on cancer prevention and control across the continuum from etiology to survivorship. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, prevention, behavioral risk reduction (e.g., alcohol consumption, nutrition, obesity, smoking, sun protection/tanning), screening behaviors, dissemination and implementation science, health services and policy research, cancer communication and decision-making, cancer epidemiology, clinical comparative effectiveness research, patient-centered outcomes research,  community-engaged research, and use of biomarkers in cancer-related research.



Candidates will be considered from a broad range of public health expertise areas, including but not limited to social and behavioral sciences, epidemiology, environmental health, or health management and policy.



The selected candidate will be appointed to a department in the College of Public Health. They would have opportunities to collaborate with professionals within the College of Public Health as well as those in the Colleges of Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing and Carver College of Medicine, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the VA. The selected candidate will have opportunities to play a key role in the NCI-designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa.



Available resources include the Iowa Cancer Registry, Iowa Residual Tissue Repository and Virtual Tissue Repository, Implementation Science Center and existing collaborations with state partners such as the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, health systems, Iowa Cancer Consortium, patient advocates, and community-based organizations.



Salary will be commensurate with experience. A startup package will be provided based on needs. The University of Iowa has Dual Career Services to assist spouses or partners in identifying meaningful employment.



College of Public Health



The College of Public Health is among the top 10 publicly funded colleges of public health in the country, and includes five academic departments: Biostatistics, Community and Behavioral Health, Epidemiology, Health Management and Policy, and Occupational and Environmental Health. Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center



The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is Iowa’s only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. The NCI designation recognized our cancer center, and its research scientists, physicians, and other health care professionals, for their roles in advancing cancer research that impacts our ability to prevent, detect and treat our patients with cancer. Not just a floor, or a building, or even confined to a single college. Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center coordinates all cancer-related research, education, and patient care by faculty from 41 departments and six colleges, as well as University of Iowa Health Care and Children's Hospital.

Education Requirement:

Doctoral degree (PhD or DrPH) in a public health science or related field required (or expected by appointment time),

Required Qualifications:

Ability to conduct research in alignment with public health interests in cancer prevention and control (for the rank of Assistant Professor) or provide evidence of experience in conducting such research (for the rank of Associate or Full Professor).



Track record of publishing in relevant peer-reviewed journals (Associate or Full Professor rank),



Ability to develop (rank of Assistant) or sustain (rank of Associate or Full Professor) an externally funded research program,



Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring.



Ability to engage in multi-disciplinary collaboration between academic departments across the university and with external organizations such as public health agencies, health care systems and policy practitioners.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience working in a public health academic setting.
