Position Description:The Program in Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine invites applications from physician-ethicists for the Richard M. Caplan Chair in Biomedical Ethics and Medical Humanities. This endowed chair is a 5-year renewable appointment. The candidate's position will be supported by the chair's endowment, the Program in Bioethics and Humanities, and the appropriate clinical department in the College that will provide the candidate's primary academic appointment.
The major portion of the successful applicant's effort will be devoted to research and scholarship, including pursuit of external funding to enhance independent and collaborative scholarly opportunities. He or she will also help advance teaching in bioethics by participating in established activities, initiating new educational offerings, and mentoring students, postgraduate fellows, and junior faculty in bioethics research and scholarship. Clinical duties will be determined by the applicant's clinical department. Some service on College, Hospital, and/or University committees will also be expected.
Education Requirement:MD degree or equivalent and board-certification
Required Qualifications:Candidates must (1) be eligible for tenure at the rank of full professor at the University of Iowa; (2) show evidence of national and international recognition as a scholar in bioethics; (3) show accomplishments in teaching, mentoring, patient care, and professional service; and (4) hold an MD degree or equivalent and board-certification, be eligible for licensure in Iowa, and intend to continue practicing clinical medicine. Candidates of all clinical backgrounds and research interests are encouraged to apply.

Desirable Qualifications:Candidates of all clinical backgrounds and research interests are encouraged to apply. A track record of extramural funding is highly desirable, and the ideal candidate would have a publication record in both conceptual scholarship and empirical research.
